Hidden in an urban oasis just 3 miles from the heart of Uptown Charlotte, the house museum now known as Historic Rosedale is one of the oldest and finest examples of Federal-style architecture in the Southeast. Constructed in 1815 by Charlotte postmaster and tax collector Archibald Frew, the house served as a private home to five generations of intertwined families—Frew, Caldwell, and Davidson—until 1986, when it was sold to the Historical Foundation and restored to its original nineteenth century grandeur.
Rosedale has a long history of ghostly activity. Family members as well as current museum staff have numerous stories of past residents who have chosen to remain behind. Voices, footsteps, photographs, and even sightings of Rosedale’s former inhabitants all contribute to her standing as one of the most haunted places in Charlotte.
CAPS is proud to partner with Historic Rosedale in leading paranormal investigations of the house and grounds three times a year, as well as participate in and contribute to monthly Haunted History tours sharing the stories of Rosedale’s ghostly residents. Each of these events generate much-needed funds towards maintaining and preserving this historic treasure.
Some of the more notable evidence seen over the years includes:
- Full body apparitions
- Unexplained sounds
- EMF readings

These thermal images were taken with a FLIR (Forward Looking InfraRed) imager. This happened during the wrap up of a student graduation project for Cole Walsh (younger brother of team member Cameron). The investigation had finished, and Cole just happened to point the imager at the back of Rosedale and said he thought he was getting something. The house itself was empty and locked up. The figure in the window only appeared in the thermal image and was not visible to anyone in the group. It moved from window to window in the otherwise empty house.
CAPS believes it was likely Mary Louise Davidson.
